My graphic novel adaptation of The Lightning Thief goes on sale today.  To help promote the release, Attila Futaki, José Villarrubia, and I attended New York Comic Con this past weekend, where we took part in a Disney panel and signed books for fans.  The early response seems to be positive, both from readers of the original series and from Publishers Weekly, who gave the adaptation a starred review. 

As much as I’d like to quote the review in its entirety—I can’t find a link—Van Jensen would probably tell me that’s a no-no on the grounds that it violates journalistic rights.  So here’s an excerpt (sorry, Gram, but to read the whole thing, you’ll have to find the print edition):

“Venditti takes the story of the half-blood Percy—who discovers that he is both the son of a god and the prime suspect in a theft of cosmic implications—and forges an adaptation that does justice not simply to Riordan’s story but works perfectly as a graphic novel. The book retains the excellent pacing of the original and gives a face to Riordan’s vision of the mythological made modern.”

If someone were to ask me what I’d like the reaction to the adaptation to be, I’d say pretty much the same thing, albeit in not-so-eloquent terms.  I’m sure the adaptation won’t please everyone—when working with such a popular series, some feathers are bound to get ruffled—but it’s nice to start out on the right foot.
